This book... this book is a work that i'm having a hard time finding words for. There was so much that cut so deeply, i had a difficult time getting through it. It was so real, it was the kind of real that reminds you of the negative in the world. A truthful account of the human condition. It's hard for me to view these peices of work outside of their content. Specific mention of the poem 34 on page 50. There is a poem, a representation of every person that drowned in a nursing home. The language she uses, the words are just so intense, a poem to represent each persons dying thoughts. Anger, denial, hope, so many emoutions conveyed. She speaks to the core of me.
The work as a whole is something truly amazing. I'm not much of an emotional person, but this author truly has a gift of recognizing human emotion and how to get to it. Her format of starting at the begining before the storm, right up to the aftermath made you feel like you were there, with the people who experienced everything first hand. To those who waited on their roofs for help, the dog waiting for his owners to return, those evacuated to the superdome, those who died in the nursing home, those children who were raped by the desperate, everyone that lost their home, everyone. This book is an eye opener, it is a reminder of how powerful nature is, and how the help of mankind could have made a world of difference. It's sad and amazing all at once.
